The complete musical program unveiled!

The complete musical program unveiled!

Mundial Montréal returns from November 14 to 17, with a lineup of eye-catching artist showcases, tailored networking activities, inspiring conferences and a few other surprises and new features. In addition to in-person programming in Montreal, some 350 delegates will have the chance to connect before and after the event via the Swapcard digital networking app.

After announcing the first names in July, we are delighted to unveil the complete official musical program for Mundial Montréal 2023. Find out today which artists will be joining Bruno Capinan, Lenka Dusilová (SoundCzech), Mi’gmafrica, Sebastian Gaskin, Second Moon (KAMS), Simon Denizart & Elli Miller Maboungou, Super Duty Tough Work (Manitoba Music) and Talibah Safiya (Music Export Memphis).

The 30 artists carefully selected by our jury highlight a wide range of musical styles, cultures, traditions and artistic approaches. With 20 Canadian and 10 international artists coming to Montreal to perform in front of a wide array of presenters, promoters, agents, managers and others, the event continues its mission to serve as a springboard for touring on “Turtle Island.”

The showcases will take place in the afternoon and evening at a dozen of Montreal’s legendary venues, offering artists and delegates a unique experience tailored to the story each artist wants to tell. Each showcase features a mix of artists that will delight through their innovation, their celebration of tradition, and for the cultural encounters they emerge from.

This year Mundial sees a significant return of exciting mutations of jazz, ranging from the Afro-tinged power of Donald Dogbo (MTL) to the steel pan-led group of Joy Lapps (Oshawa), Vietnamese virtuoso Huu Bac and his quintet (MTL), or the Brazilian soul jazz project Tio Chorinho with Flavia Nascimento (Toronto/Quebec).

There will be plenty of inspiration for the dancers, with the amapiano-pop electro project SPRLUA (MTL), salsa mastermind Andy Rubal & Son del Sun (MTL), Maghrebin trance project Zar Electrik (France), the funky Brazilian soul pop of Lara Klaus (MTL), Quebec industry legend Gilles Garand (Beloeil) presenting his very first musical project “Le Parcous d’un Passeur,” and the Haitian dance grooves of Mister Drê-D (MTL). Also, the Arabian fuzz project Al-Qasar (France), programmed as part of the Prix Pont Transatlantique, in partnership with Babel Music XP.

This year features two exciting flamenco projects including Andalusyria (MTL), a musical conversation between 3 virtuosic musicians with Syrian, Spanish, and Cuban origins; and the explosive Mediterranean music and dance of Qairo (Toronto/Spain).

The Canadian Eastern European diaspora is well represented by Montreal slavic dub punks Dumai Dunai and Newfoundland’s most explosive Ukrainian band Kubasonics (presented by Music Newdoundland and Labrador).

Mundial is pleased to see some influences of classical and traditional music into the program, with chamber pop ensemble Pallmer (presented by Music New Brunswick); festive, thoughtful Quebec  trad project La Déferlance (Québec); the meditative atmospheric compositions of Mari Kalkun (Estonia); and from Finland, building off the Nordic Bridges project, the accordion mutations of Johanna Juhola Trio.

This year features three artists from Latin America, with the traditions of powerful, political, emotional singer-songwriters represented by Mayan singer-songwriter Sara Curruchich (Guatemala); an exploration of the gaucho songbook with Argentinian duo Don Hilario & Niña del Monte; and the work of new Québec-Dominican artist Maritza (MTL).

The 2023 programming committee

Selecting and curating the artists for the official showcase was no easy task for the jury and the Mundial Montréal programming team. Denise Bolduc, Doug Cox, Raeesa Lalani, Ralph Boncy and Yasmina Proveyer selected the best of the global music scene from over 500 submissions.
