Mundial Montreal, ushering in world music 2.0!

Montreal, October 9th, 2012

Following last year’s successful launch of Mundial Montreal, we are delighted to announce the festival is back this year, bigger and better!  Mundial Montreal, presented in incollaboration with Galaxie your musical universe, is a music conference and festival that showcases the best of world music from Canada. Celebrating Canada’s rich cultural diversity through a variety of showcases and venues, Mundial Montreal hosts some of the most sought-after programmers and tastemakers to participate in ground-breaking networking events, panels and meetings. This year Mundial Montreal increases its programming up to 33 artists, in 10 different venues, and over 100 delegates from both Canada and beyond.

Festival season ends with a bang!

The second edition of Mundial Montreal is an unprecedented opportunity for the public to discover new artists in a series of free and ticketed shows, the best of world music from all over Canada at once, showcasing for Montreal audience, national and international buyers, programmers, labels and journalists. Mundial artists will range in styles such as Bulkan Beat, Salsa, Samba, Rara, Reggae, world Blues, Nuevo Flamenco, laptop hip hop, Quebecois Cajun Punk, Arabic and Afro-dub.  Additionally, this year Mundial will put a spotlight on “World Music 2.0”, taking an innovative look at how the world music “genre” fits into the digital music world and how hybridizations of different cultures and aesthetics are evolving from the traditional. This year’s Mundial performers include Heavy Soundz (Syli d’Or de la Musique du Monde winner), Harry Manx, Marco Calliari, Nomadic Massive, Rômmel Ribeiro, Socalled, and many more!

Hot topics for World Music professionals!

Mundial will delve further into the discussion about World Music 2.0 and other hot topics such as:

  • Music With Borders: Obama improved U.S. Visa processing.  Tinariwen can not get into Canada.  The union works for Canadian musicians.  Canadian festivals are exempt from visa requirements.  This session will review the latest news in a music world with borders.
  • Touring Tactics: The big picture (macro) of Canadian touring and three regional (micro) perspectives on strategies addressing Quebec, Ontario and the West.
  • World Music Forum II: Twenty five years into the “world music” brand, this session will explore marketing and outreach strategies that we have been learning as we mix diverse communities.  Laptop beat production and cultural collisions are defining what is being called “World Music 2.0″.  Where have we been? Where are we going?

All these and more will be dissected by some of the industry’s biggest names and, along with events such as the speed schmoozing (or professional speed dating) sessions, will be an excellent source of networking opportunities and information for industry delegates.

Founded by Sébastien Nasra (M for Montreal) and curated by Derek Andrews (Luminato), Mundial seeks to build bridges in the touring opportunities for world music in Canada, and beyond. Nasra’s intentions are clear, “I want to use my M for Montreal experience to serve the world music community in audience development on a local, national and international front. It is also an amazing opportunity for me as a music fan to get up to date with the best emerging artists in the field. Plus, let me tell you: those guys know how to party!  With decades of experience in the world music industry, Andrews’ mandate is also evident, “to create a strong network of producers, grassroots organizations and world music artists determined to expand their horizons, swap trade secrets and inspire a better vision for world music in Canada.”

Creative industry collide at Mundial

With all of the conferences in the creative sector taking place in Montreal this same week, Mundial is bringing together delegates from M for Montreal and Montreal International Game Summit (MIGS-Montreal Digital) to take part in a massive launch event on November 13 at la S.A.T.  The event will be sponsored by Louisiana Entertainment who will bring The Soul Rebels and 3 time Grammy-nominated Cedric Watson & Bijoux Creole (in collaboration with Festival International de Louisiane). This event marks the expansion of Mundial to include international artists within their programming with a clear intention bridging Quebec artists with their southern cousins. Therefore, local favorites such as Canaille, Marco Calliari, Cécile Doo-Kingué will take part in the opening night show.

The conference will also engage local partners in support of global music including Festival International de Jazz de Montreal, Productions Nuits d’Afrique/Syli d’Or, Vision Diversité, Folquébec, and others. Mundial will partner again with Les Productions Nuits d’Afrique to showcase the winner of their annual contest Syli d’Or de la Musique du Monde. Mundial will also partner for the first time with Vision Diversité and select a “Coup de Coeur” Mundial Montréal dans la Vitrine des musiques métissées de Vision Diversité. The Coup de Coeur Mundial Montréal will showcase on Friday, November 16.

GALAXIE is once again very proud to support Mundial Montreal. Like last year, one artist performing at Mundial Montreal will be selected by a jury to receive the GALAXIE Rising Stars Award, a cash prize of 3000$ and a recognition that will contribute to the development of their career.  “The objective of the GALAXIE Rising Star Program is to help provide Canadian musical talent with a stage to perform in front of existing and new fans, to help advance their careers. In order to represent the diversity of music on the GALAXIE channels, we support events in all categories of music,” said Gary Pelletier, VP Marketing at Stingray Digital and Administrator of the GALAXIE Rising Star Program. “Mundial Montreal perfectly reflects our objectives by exposing Canadian world music artists to domestic and international music bookers and industry executives,” he concluded.

Mundial 2011 recap

A triumphant debut for Canada’s 1st ever world music showcase conference, featuring 22 artists in 4 days, more than 100 professionals and announcing the winner of the GALAXIE Rising Stars Mundial Award:  ELAGE DIOUF!

Montreal, November 21st, 2011

Montreal witnessed the birth of the nation’s first annual world music conference this past week as Mundial Montreal, presented by GALAXIE, brought together some of Canada’s most influential and established professionals in world music.  Mundial Montreal Artistic Director Derek Andrews noted, “The spirit of Mundial Montreal number one was very positive.  Over and over we heard from delegates that they welcomed our initiative.”

“This is exactly the focused conference on world music that was much needed in the conference landscape in Canada.  For a first-time conference, it was amazingly well-thought out and executed.” Fiona Black, Director of Programming, Centre for the Performing Arts, Capilano University, B.C.

The event saw a huge turn-out for networking activities, meetings, and the 1st ever World Music Forum as Mundial Montreal laid the foundation for bridges to be built and a network to forge between not just artists and programmers, but between presenters locally and across the country.  The well-attended World Music Forum gave the opportunity to participants to voice their opinions on a range of issues and create a dialogue both stimulating and necessary to establishing better cooperation between organizations.  Another first for many veterans in the field, the Speed Shmoozing was a huge hit both fun and effective.  Andrews noted the experience to be like a “frantically productive series of effective first dates.”

Mundial Montreal succeeded in forging unprecedented links between presenters in Quebec and beyond with representatives from Western Roots Artistic Directors (WRAD), Ontario Council of Folk Festivals (OCFF), Jazz Festivals Canada, CAPACOA, CINARS, Bourse RIDEAU, Montréal Jazz Festival, Les Productions Nuits d’Afrique, Musique Multi-Montréal, FolQuébec, Rythmes du monde de Chicoutimi, Festival des Traditions du Monde, Festival Musique du Bout du Monde and more.  Sebastien Nasra producer of Mundial Montreal notes: “I never expected such a number of participants in year one this response clearly illustrates the need for these isolated organizations to come together as a community” adding “Derek’s (Andrews) programming was fantastic. I made musical discoveries that inspire me to explore the influences of World music on rock alternative and emerging music, such as what we feature at M for Montreal…“

“I’m very confident that we’ll see positive results in the very near future in both, the networking opportunities among festivals and presenters, as well as, many of these artists travelling across the country.” Alfredo Caxaj, Sunfest, ON
